What exactly is "Synchronize Repository" supposed to do? Options

I have a backup plan that I created a couple of weeks ago. Because it backs up a drive-letter-mapped drive I run it as a Windows scheduled task. When it first ran it backed up around 3Gb. It runs every day and backs up a small number of changed files. All as expected.

Yesterday I arrived to find that it had backed up the whole file set again overnight. Thinking this was because CBOB was confused about what was backed up and what wasn't, I used the "Synchronize Repository" function on that account but it still wants to back up the lot.

What does the "Synchronize Repository" actually do?

If I have a local file set and a corresponding identical Amazon file set, how do I "tell" CBOB to resynchronize itself and not try to back up the whole lot again?

Why isn't there an option to perform backups by inspecting the datestamp of the local file and comparing it with the datestamp (i.e. the name of the folder) on AWS? It seems that CBOB relies on some database it builds.

TIA
Ross

Hi Ross,

Please make sure you synchronized a right S3 account (in case if you are using multiple S3 accounts). Sync repository makes local database data the same as in S3 storage. Also check the Backup Storage view if it displays backed up files.

If the issue is still there, please send us the diagnostic logs.

Thanks,

Hi Juli,

I have sent the diagnostics log separately. I ran the "Synchronize Repository" again on the account that is giving problems. It ran for several minutes and finally reported 85630 files and that it had updated the database. I ran the associated backup and it was obvious that it was going to back up the entire file set again so I stopped the backup.

The backup storage tab shows what I would expect.

I am trying some more experiments

Hi Juli,

Some further tests:

I created a completely new S3 account that points to the same S3 bucket, and has the same backup prefix as the one that is giving me problems.

I then created a completely new backup plan 3a54b948-5826-4ea0-b8c5-f559c4faad31.cbb that uses this new account, and specified the same folders to back up, the same file exclusions, i.e. a copy of the backup plan that is giving me problems.

I then performed a synchronize on the new account. The Backup storage tab shows all the files I would expect.

I then run the new backup. It starts backing up the entire file set.

What am I doing wrong? Is it related to the fact that this is a mapped drive I am backing up from?

The log files seem to contain little useful information.

which is weird, because CBOB was obviously furiously sending files to S3.

I have to fix this. Please tell me what to do and what log files to send.

Thanks,
Ross
